Last day on the job for BVI governorFriday, April 7, 2006ROAD TOWN, BVI: Governor of the British Virgin Islands, Thomas Macan, spent his last day on the job Thursday. Governor Macan reflected on his tenure in the BVI at a farewell reception hosted on Wednesday by Chief Minister Dr Orlando Smith and his wife, Lorna. The Governor told the assembly that he and his wife, Janet , were made to feel at home during their time in the BVI. “My wife Janet and I take this opportunity to say thank you to the myriad people who have made us welcome over the last three and a half years,” said Governor Macan “We have made many good friendships, which I am confident we shall take away. And you have allowed us into the heart of BVI life.” Governor Macan departs the Territory on April 10 after spending three-and-a-half years there. He will be succeeded by David Pearey, who is to be sworn in as Governor on April 18. In his farewell remarks, Governor Macan touched on the evolving relationship between the BVI and the United Kingdom. His comments come just over one month after the first round of constitutional negotiations between the UK and BVI were held in Road Town. “So long as the BVI wishes those bonds [between the BVI and the UK] to continue, both Governments have to agree on how the shared responsibilities between them are dealt with. Either side may propose change: both must agree it. Both must be comfortable with the consequences; neither must feel either threatened by or at risk from them,” Governor Macan said. On the topic of the Governor’s powers, Mr. Macan said the governor is inevitably going to be at the centre of the relationship between the UK and BVI and, consequently, must have sufficient authority to ensure both Governments are content. He said it has been a privilege for him to function in such a role. The Governor’s speech was punctuated by humour. He reflected on the many walks he participated in for various departments and organisations. “We have traversed the archipelago from Anegada to Jost van Dyke, with most of the stops in between. For all that, we are very grateful,” he said. Governor Macan also expressed appreciation to the Chief Minister and his wife for hosting the reception, as well as to those who attended the event. “For Janet and myself, it is time for a career change as far as diplomacy is concerned. We are grateful for the forbearance of some, and the friendship of many,” he said. The Chief Minister and Opposition Leader Ralph O’Neal gave brief remarks, while Mrs. Smith presented tokens of appreciation to the Governor and his wife. Permanent Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office Clyde Lettsome chaired the proceedings. Back...Most popular articles: viewed, printed and e-mailed
