Morocco and Spain to send police to UN mission in Haiti

Friday, April 7, 2006

RABAT, Morocco (AFP): About one week after withdrawing their joint military contingent from Haiti, Morocco and Spain plan to contribute police forces to the United Nations mission in the Caribbean nation, officials in both countries said Thursday.

Rabat and Madrid "have decided on a joint contribution to the police component of the UN Mission for the stabilization of Haiti," a statement from the Moroccan Foreign Ministry said.

It added that the cooperation was an extension of their previous joint effort sending a Moroccan-Spanish military unit in 2004, which was deployed along the Haitian border with the Dominican Republic.

The joint force was withdrawn after "a highly satisfactory" mission on March 30, the statement said.

In Madrid, the Spanish foreign ministry announced that it would send 50 police officers and security forces to the Haitian mission.

Morocco did not indicate how many police it would contribute to the new police mission.
