KINGSTON, Jamaica: West Indies pace bowler Daren Powell believes the regional side must concentrate on playing competitive sessions if they are going to improve their Test performances.

The 27-year-old Jamaican, who made his debut for the Caribbean side against New Zealand at Bridgetown in 2002, was a member of the Windies team that suffered a 2-0 Test series defeat in New Zealand last month and he said the team must concentrate for three sessions in order to be competitive again.

"We are having sessions by sessions where [we are not playing well]," Powell said after returning to Jamaica from the disappointing New Zealand tour.

"We have one good session and then the next session we are all over the place....We have seen for the last 12 months where things are coming together and it is just for us to go out there to make, not a good session, but three good sessions for the day and we'll pick up wickets."

Powell has collected 43 wickets from his 17 Test matches thus far, and he said there are signs of improvement from the West Indies team, especially in the bowling category.

"We are creating chances, and once you are doing that and putting teams under pressure we can dismiss them for a small total," Powell said.

In the meantime, another Jamaican pacer, Jerome Taylor, who suffered a hamstring strain in his come-back Test in New Zealand after being out for almost three years, said he's on the mend.

"At the moment I am pretty much OK. It's just for me to start doing some cricket skills again," he said.

"I've been running around and doing everything but it's for me to start getting some bowling in and see how the hamstring will react to that sort of work."

Powell and Taylor, along with left handed aggressive opening batsman Chris Gayle, all returned to the Caribbean with the regional team last weekend to start preparation for the forthcoming one-day series against Zimbabwe.
