Digicel had its official launch on Wednesday in Port of Spain. Digicel, had planned launching its mobile phone service on November 30 last year, but had to push back its start up date to March this year.

Meanwhile, the Trinidad Telecommunications Authority's arbitration committee has met and is to decide on interconnection rates between Dicigel and TSTT by the middle of June this year. Interconnections rates had been a sore point among the parties wanting to decide what to charge customers.

Trinidad 's Digicel CEO, Stephen Brewer during an exclusive interview with Caribbean Net News said during an earlier meeting TSTT wanted to have interconnection rates based on their costs which Digicel rejected.

"TSTT wanted the interim rates or the interconnect rates to be based on their costs. They have got several hundred thousand customers, they have been in business twenty-six years, we are a new company. I honestly don't believe that we should have our rates based on TSTT's costs," Brewer said as he spoke with Caribbean Net News on Wednesday.

"It was a long hard fight and the waiting is over" Brewer added.

Caribbean Net News was also told that about TT$1.9 billion by Digicel had been spent in Trinidad by way of investment to date with the provision of some three hundred jobs.
