Trinidad police probe kidnapping ring

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Members of the Trinidad police Inter Agency Task Force are saying that they have infiltrated a major kidnapping ring after seizing a cache of arms, genuine army uniforms, bulletproof vests and tie straps.
The officers also seized fragmentation jackets, which bomb technicians wear to resist shock from blasts.
The items were seized on Monday afternoon after the officers received information which led them to a demolition site of an apartment complex at Marcano Quarry, John John, Laventille, east Port of Spain.
The officers say the army fatigues; all bear the regimental numbers of serving soldiers. Senior army and police officers are now trying to ascertain how the criminal elements got the uniforms.
Reports say that the soldiers, under whose names the uniforms were assigned, are to be questioned as investigators are unsure whether the uniforms were reported stolen.
It has also been reported that those responsible for the illegal items were about to commit a kidnapping for ransom. The officers of the ITAF have been involved in a series of Anti Crime operations in Laventille and parts of East Port-of-Spain.
Meanwhile, Lance Corporal Miles Henry appeared before Magistrate Avason Quinlan in the Port-of- Spain Magistrate's court on Tuesday. The soldier was charged with unlawful possession of a .380 pistol and 35 rounds of .382 ammunition.
An attorney for the soldier, in an application for bail said that his client had neither any pending matters nor previous convictions.
He was then granted bail in the sum of TT$200,000 with one surety. The 35-year-old Defence Force Officer was ordered to return to court on April 13.
