ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: Grenadian Commissioner of Police Winston James is seeking the assistance and involvement of parents and community leaders to address the recent upsurge in youth violence around the country.
James made the call against the recent escalation of incidents and subsequent reports involving youths especially in the areas of St George’s South, the Town of St George’s, the St George’s North West and St David’s.
It is the intention of the Commissioner to also seek the involvement of the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Parliamentarians and NGOs to address and formulate solutions and strategies to deal with the growing problem.
He also applauded the recent efforts of Parliamentarians who have engaged various youths in their constituencies.
Commissioner James stated that the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) will use all available resources to respond to this problem and is urging parents and guardians to monitor and be more involved in their children’s activities.
“We cannot, and would not allow a few misguided youngsters to disrupt and create any form of chaos in our communities, and not respond in an appropriate manner. It is the intention of the RGPF to provide a safe peaceful environment for all,” said James.
The Minister of National Security, Senator Einstein Louison, in recent addresses has also called on the RGPF to address this problem.
Meantime, after a lengthy investigation and assistance from the community, Officers of Criminal Investigation Department on Saturday, 1st April 2007, laid charges against a La Poterie resident for the murder of Skitta Edgar of the same area.
Hercules Andrews, an 18-year-old unemployed resident of the area, was detained on Friday and formally charged on Saturday afternoon at the Grenville Police Station.
19-year-old Edgar was discovered in her home by her younger brother with multiple stab wounds to the body. The incident occurred on January 9, 2006.
Andrews made his first court appearance on Monday 3rd April at the Grenville Magistrate Court.
The Commissioner of Police commended the residents of La Poterie and surrounding areas for the assistance provided to the police, and their patience and cooperation during the investigation.
The officers involved in the investigation, under the command of Superintendent Joseph, were praised by the Commissioner for the high quality of work done in the Skitta Edgar and John Joseph murders and other major investigations, including those involving members of the Royal Grenada Police Force.
