LONDON, England: West Indies batting maestro Brian Lara moved up one place to number six in the latest LG International Cricket Council (ICC) Rankings release.
Lara, who holds the world record for the highest individual score for an innings in both Test and first-class cricket, climbed one place to finish with a rating of 800.
Australian Ricky Ponting, who scored twin hundreds in Australia's 112-run win over South Africa in Durban not only retained his top spots in the batting rankings, but also gave him one of the highest ratings of all-time, at 937.
Ponting's Australian teammate Matthew Hayden and South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis share the number two spot with each collecting a rating of 877.
After Lara, the West Indies have three other players in the batting top 30, captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul at 18th, Chris Gayle (24th), and Ramnaresh Sarwan (29th).
Like Ponting, Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan retained his top spot in the bowling rankings. He is followed by Australian veterans Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, while South African Makhaya Ntini (fourth) and England's Matthew Hoggard (fifth) complete the top five.
The Windies' best ranked bowlers are Corey Collymore, at 23rd, and Pedro Collins (28th).
The LG ICC Player Rankings are moving averages that rates players on a scale of 0 to 1,000 points. If a player's performance is improving on his past record, his points increase. However, if his performance is declining then his points will go down.
