PARAMARIBO, Suriname: Last week an elderly woman became the fifth murder victim in Suriname this year and the third in consecutive weeks.

The 74-year old woman died after a heated argument with her former son-in-law, who allegedly beat her to death in the western district of Nickerie Wednesday afternoon.

The man is a Guyanese national who is also accused, assisted by an accomplice, of tying up his wife during the early evening hours while he stole beverages, jewellery and cash from the home.

The elderly women was hit very hard on the head with a dough roller and died while receiving medical attention at a local hospital. Police confirm both suspects fled the crime scene and went into hiding.

“We discovered an elderly woman lying in a pool of blood with serious head injuries. Inquiries reveal that she was beaten numerous times on the head and she died around 10 o’clock while receiving medical attention,” according to Nickerie Police Commander, Elfriet Metroos.

No arrests have been made and the suspects may have escaped to neighbouring Guyana. The Surinamese police are working closely with their Guyanese counterparts to apprehend the suspects.

Another Guyanese national allegedly killed his wife in a jealous rage on Monday afternoon. The murder took place near Boskamp, a small fishermen village 75 kilometers from Paramaribo.

Witnesses report the 47year-old suspect and his 46 year-old wife left the village in a boat to do some shopping. The man returned around 8 o’clock in the evening without his wife.

Shortly thereafter, residents discovered the woman’s lifeless body in the boat and immediately contacted the military and police authorities at a nearby base.

Police officers discovered a 3-foot piece of wood with bloodstains and a broken watch wristband in the boat. According to investigators, the suspect struck the woman several times on the head and the powerful blows may have caused his watch band to break.

Further investigation reveals that jealousy may have prompted the murder, as the accused suspected his wife of having an extramarital affair.

The three other murder victims this year were an elderly business man and two young housewives who died at the hands of brutal criminals.

The recent killings have resulted in a public outcry to the government to restore law and order in Suriname.

Since last weekend, police and military have increased patrols in the capital and other districts. More than 25 suspects have been arrested in relation to the surge of brutal robberies and rape incidents.
