Monday, April 3, 2006

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands: Digicel announced Friday that it has been granted a license to establish a GSM cellular network in the newly liberalised market of the Turks & Caicos Islands, further expanding its pan-Caribbean network across the region.

This announcement follows the government of Turks & Caicos’ termination in January this year of the 106-year telecommunications monopoly held by Cable & Wireless. in order to create positive competition that will drive mobile telecommunications development creating choice, competitive pricing, and technological innovation that will benefit Turks & Caicos mobile customers.

“We welcome Digicel and its dynamic approach to business in Turks & Caicos. The benefits Digicel has created in other Caribbean markets will help bring cutting-edge technology to the telecommunications sector, while making a significant contribution towards the development of tourism, financial services and local businesses,” said Jeffrey Hall, Turks & Caicos Minister of Communications.

Digicel has consistently been first to enter emerging Caribbean markets with product offerings that distinguish its service from other competitors, including its advanced WiMAX wireless broadband technology, per second billing, prepaid roaming, GPRS, Rollover Minutes, CUG (Closed User Groups) and internet-based recharge services, all supported by a highly trained customer service staff that has been top-rated by independent consumer surveys.

Combined with an imminent launch in Haiti, Digicel’s new license in Turks & Caicos represents an expansion push and foothold in the northern Caribbean region.

According to the CEO for Digicel Turks & Caicos, Oliver Chatten, “Digicel is excited about entering the market of Turks & Caicos. We look forward to placing this nation at the cutting edge of wireless technology and challenging competitors in a manner that drives positive business development. Our customer-centric approach and superior network quality has led to our success and increased competition in each market we enter. We look forward to becoming the provider of choice and playing an active role in Turks & Caicos’ community and economy.”

Turks & Caicos national, Jay Saunders, will support Digicel’s launch and enterprise in Turks & Caicos as Chief Operating Officer supported by a team of local employees.
