Brokeback ban stirs controversy in Bahamas
Monday, April 3, 2006
MIAMI, USA (AFP): The banning in the Bahamas of the "Brokeback Mountain" movie has stirred controversy in the island chain, in what a gay group called "an attempt to censor an entire community."
The Bahamian Plays and Films Control Board has barred movie theaters from showing the award-winning movie, saying that "it shows extreme homosexuality, nudity and profanity" and "has no value for the Bahamian public."
The gay rights Rainbow Alliance of the Bahamas expressed outrage over the ban, which spokeswoman Erin Greene described as "an attempt to censor an entire community, the gay community, in the democratic Bahamas."
She said the ban was "a farce" as the movie is widely available in the Bahamas on DVD and video.
The ban has also come under fire in newspapers and on radio.
"We cant be shut off and told that something is not good for us," said Liz Roberts, who has worked in film production in the Bahamas. "We dont need to be told by some sort of organization that this movie is objectionable," she said on a radio talk show, labeling the ban "Brokeback bigotry."
