GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Several media houses in Guyana have reported receiving a compact disc recording of what appears to be a telephone conversation between the Commissioner of Police, Winston Felix, and Opposition Member of Parliament, Attorney-at-Law Basil Williams.

Many of the media houses said the recording was delivered sometime after midday on Monday. Security officials believe that one of the phones may have been tapped, hence the recording. The two officials named in the recording have not yet issued a response.

The conversation between the two persons on the CD was focused on recent killings and kidnappings. The audio recording, which was broadcast on several television stations across the country, was played in its entirety.

It surfaced after a weekend of intense searches to recover missing guns from the army's gun depot. The search effort was a joint army/police operation and targeted several business premises including those owned and controlled by Saheed 'Roger' Khan who was identified in a recent US report as a drug baron.

A joint services statement said that the security forces executed cordon and search operations, during which police seized 7 handguns, 2 pellet guns, 2 pistol magazines with three live 9mm rounds, 4 heavily tinted vehicles, including an F150 bullet proof pick up truck, 7 hand held radios, 3 mobile telephones, 41 small containers with cocaine, 1 Guyana passport, a quantity of live and blank ammunition, 4 AK 47 magazines, 2 cleaning kits, 2 revolvers, 1 pistol, and a quantity of police uniforms.

Then on Monday, a motor vehicle of interest to the security forces was seized and quatities of military uniforms and ammunition were discovered. Police said they detained nine males and two females.
