Simpson can beat Campbell says Coach FrancisMonday, March 20, 2006by Gary Smith MELBOURNE, Australia: Stephen Francis, the coach of high-profile Jamaican sprinter and 100 metres record holder Asafa Powell, believes that his pupil Sherone Simpson can upstage Olympic gold medallist Veronica Campbell in the women's 200m dash at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, now taking place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia. Simpson, the world-leader over 100m with a time of 11.22 seconds this season, will switch to running the 200m against the specialist Campbell, who holds a career best time of 22.05, achieved on her way to victory at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. "I do not see why she can't win (the 200m)," Francis told the Jamaica Gleaner on Sunday. "She can run fast enough to put down a very competitive time at this time of the year, and I think she is going to run a personal best." With Campbell's blistering 22.05 personal best in mind, Francis said Simpson is in good form and is ready to go below her own personal best of 22.52 and her rivals will also have to better that performance in order to defeat the Olympic 100m finalist. "If anybody wants to beat her they have to run faster than her current personal best of 22.52," he said confidently. "I chose the 200m for Sherone (Simpson) because the aim is to get her properly ready to run. I did not want her to be running an event when she is jetlagged so the extra four days that she would have to recover I think will do the trick." In the meantime, Campbell, who only arrived in Melbourne last Friday, said she is ready to transfer her indoor form outdoors. "I will be fine. I am healthy right now and my aim is just to come here and do my best," Campbell said. "I think I will be able to make the transition from indoors to outdoors." Campbell, a former IAAF Coca Cola World Junior Championships sprint double champion, and Simpson will not be the only sprinters to watch in the women's 200m dash. Another specialised world-class candidate for the title will be Cayman Islands in-form Cydonie Mothersill, who has already proven herself down under with a quick fire 22.57. The men's race is also expected be an exciting close contest. With world junior record holder and pre-meet race favourite Usain Bolt of Jamaica a no show, Australian world-leader Daniel Batman, teammate Patrick Johnson, Nigerian, Uchenna Emedolu and the English and Jamaicans should make the contest interesting.
