Digicel brings West Indies stars to Anguilla for Celebrity 20-20Friday, February 10, 2006THE VALLEY, Anguilla: Digicel, principal sponsors of West Indies cricket, brought Windies stars Daren Powell, Ryan Hinds and Darren Sammy to Anguilla Thursday to join forces with local celebrities Omari Banks, Cardigan Connor, Lanvil Harrigan and Alex Adams to compete in a friendly under 19s versus Seniors 20-over match at Ronald Webster Park as well as provide coaching clinics to young aspiring cricketers. On Friday, over 100 Anguillan male and female youngsters will benefit from a Digicel Coaching Clinic involving the Windies players and covering areas such as discipline, batting, bowling, physical fitness and fielding. According to President of the Anguilla Cricket Association, Benjie Hughes, “It is wonderful to have the Windies players here in Anguilla and with such great participation from our own local cricketing stars, the two-day event promises to be very exciting and entertaining. Raising interest and passion for the game of cricket is crucial for the future success of cricket on our island so we are grateful to Digicel that they have made this event possible.” Digicel, which launched services in Anguilla in December 2005, has developed the initiative as part of its ongoing commitment to help develop cricket from the youth levels and bring the game closer to the fans. “From the onset of our sponsorship of the West Indies team, Digicel has been committed to driving the popularity of the game in the region by increasing fans exposure to Windies cricket and allowing more fans to interact with the players themselves. We are delighted to be in a position to bring this fun 20/20 match and youth clinic to Anguilla. As we continue to grow in this market we look forward to strengthening our commitment and participation in Anguilla life” said Digicel Market Manager Stephenie Brooks.
In January Digicel St Kitts hosted a similar event where West Indies stars Chris Gayle, Daren Powell Ian Bradshaw, Marlon Samuels Ryan Hinds and Dwayne Smith participated in a Digicel St. Kitts versus Nevis 20-over format at the Edgard Gilbert Cricket Grounds. The cricketers also participated in youth coaching clinics with more than 60 young up coming male and female cricketers in both St. Kitts and Nevis. Since becoming the official sponsor of West Indies cricket in October 2004, Digicel has launched a number of initiatives including broadcast sponsorship, the launch of Windies WAP, competitions and attractive TV campaigns, designed to enhance the West Indian Cricket experience for fans and players alike.
