LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Tip of the tropical iceberg

Monday, January 30, 2006

Dear Sir:

Mr. Vanderpool-Wallace touches on a very important issue in this 26 January 2006 Caribbean Net News article. The Internet has been vastly underutilized throughout the region.

Internet businesses like Google, eBay, and Capella University require very little physical infrastructure, yet generate revenues that rival the annual budgets of many national governments. Such businesses can start up and establish headquarters anywhere, where there is reliable access to the Internet and a government that welcomes entrepreneurs, foreign and domestic.

Caribbean governments should relax immigration restrictions and reduce or eliminate work-permit fees for those who would come to the region, in order to start online commercial ventures.

There is much more to ecommerce than pornography and gambling, and many of us would like to help with the development of your human capital infrastructure, but we are priced out of the market.
