Nevis pledges continued support for relationship with BritainThursday, January 26, 2006CHARLESTOWN, Nevis:
Premier of Nevis, Vance Amory, has given a commitment that the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) will continue to work to strengthen relations with Britain because of the island’s historical bond and the value of the relationship.
Mr Amory gave the undertaking on when he welcomed British High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Mr Duncan Taylor CBE, and Mr Terry Knight, Resident British Commissioner to St. Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda, to Nevis on Wednesday. Accompanied by Deputy Premier Malcolm Guishard, Mr Amory noted that Nevis had received assistance from Britain in the area of education and security. “Over the years the British High Commission has assisted us in accessing training for our people at different universities in Britain and provided technical support for education for the libraries. “There has been also a significant contribution to the police over the years and that is an important area of corporation. I think we expect that in those areas we will see additional contributions in the future and we really would expect that we would benefit significantly from those contributions,” he said. Meantime, Mr Taylor explained that over the next four years his mission would be to promote the relationship between the United Kingdom and the countries of the Eastern Caribbean. “I look forward to promoting a positive and mutually respectful relationship with the United Kingdom and we look forward to that relationship blossoming,” he said. Mr Knight who took up his appointment on January 1, 2006 noted that his main role would be to work with the High Commissioner to further the relationship that already existed between the two countries. “My main role on the islands is working with the Commissioner in Barbados is to continue to further the relationship between our two countries which is always which is already very friendly and very deep and continue a seamless operation from my predecessor to continue the business between our two countries,” he said.
