Grenada PM says Cricket World Cup will help create a more unified regionFriday, July 28, 2006ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell has signaled the region’s readiness to host the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
The Prime Minister noted that the World Cup will bring the region closer, “Our countries now share a common and powerful goal - hosting World Cup 2007 - and a common philosophy - putting on the best Cricket World Cup ever. Specialists and experts from inside and outside our region have formed teams and are sharing their expertise and focusing their energies and efforts on achieving that common goal. "We are seeing a level of communication, cooperation and coordination of effort from these teams and from the people and governments of the Caribbean that we haven’t seen before. We in the Caribbean region firmly believe that this will provide an important and practical test for our Caribbean Single Market and Economy. "Because of the Cricket World Cup our Caribbean governments are now integrating some of their legislation as well as their immigration and customs. For example, during CWC 2007, Indian nationals will need only one visa to visit any of the nine countries hosting matches. "Moreover, we are sharing intelligence more effectively and are intent on improving security throughout the entire region. Better regional security will therefore be one of the legacies of the Cricket World Cup.” Mitchell also made a strong case for Indian and Asian visitors to come to the region. He highlighted the tremendous business and investment opportunities offered in the region as well as the tourism potential of the region. He said “I can assure you that not only will you see good cricket at modern and well-appointed stadia but you will also witness the beauty of the Caribbean. We sincerely hope that our stunning beaches, picturesque rivers and lakes and our lush forests will all form lasting and pleasant memories that all visitors to the region can treasure. "We in the region also know that the warmth, friendliness and marvelous hospitality of the West Indian people will add significant value to your Caribbean experience. Those of you who come to Grenada, the Isle of Spice, will get something extra-special. We will put some spice into your lives.” Throughout his speech Mitchell also reminded the audience of the many historical links between India and the Caribbean.
