ST. GEORGE’S Grenada: At a meeting held in St. Lucia on December 14, a panel of regional journalists unanimously selected St Kitts-Nevis golfer Trevor Jimmy Levine and Grenadian swimmer Tuesday Watts as the OECS Male and Female Sports Personalities for 2005
The criterion for these awards was the athletes must represent an OECS country and they were judged on their performance in meets, championships and tournaments that took place in the Caribbean.
After much discussion between the journalists on the performances of athletes in all the sporting disciplines, two names stood above the rest.
Trevor Jimmy Levine the St Kitts and Nevis and OECS top golfer, after winning three tournaments and placing second in another three, as well as captaining the OECS golf team, was named OECS Male Sports Personality. Levine was followed in the list for men by St Vincent’s distance runner Pamenos Ballentyne and Nevis star batsman Runako Morton.
Once again, Grenada’s super swimmer Tuesday Watts has done her country proud by winning 13 gold medals in regional meets, setting seven OECS records and being named the OECS Female Sports Personality.
Tuesday topped the list of female athletes, followed by St Lucia’s high jump star Lavern Spencer and St Kitts-Nevis 400m runner Tiandra Ponteen.
The OECS will celebrate its 25th Anniversary in 2006 and is anticipating more outstanding performances by regional athletes and a calendar of exciting sporting events.
