Turks & Caicos magazine wins again
Friday,  November 4, 2005

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands: For the third consecutive year "Where When How - Turks & Caicos Islands" magazine was singled out for honours by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), at their annual conference.

This year, "Where When How" won the CTO's Third Annual Worldwide Travel Writer/ Photographer Awards Contest for the "Best Guide Book on the Caribbean" from the Caribbean. The award was announced at the 28th annual Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC-28) held Oct. 21 - 26 at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

At the CTO's first contest in 2003, "Where When How" also won for the Best Guide Book in the Caribbean category. That year the conference was held in New York.

Last year the popular, locally published magazine won "Best Photograph Not Accompanying an Article". The photo was taken by avid Providenciales photographer Marta Morton of the Harbour Club Villas. It was the "Best Photo of the Month" within "Where When How". The award was handed out at the CTO's annual conference held in Aruba.

Long time residents Brenda and Charles (Chuck) Zdenek of Ad Vantage Ltd., the agency which created and publishes "Where When How", were surprised and honoured to win the award again this year. "For the Turks & Caicos Islands to be recognized for the best guide book in the Caribbean is a great achievement." Chuck commented during an interview at their offices in the Saltmills.

"Where When How" first hit the streets in October 1994 as a monthly publication. However the growth of the islands and the magazine and the time involved to prepare each issue convinced them to go bi-monthly.

The very first issue was just 36 pages, printed on blue paper with a colour cover. The current bi-monthly issue has grown to about 200 pages printed in full colour. "The success of the magazine is also due to the tremendous support we receive from our advertisers. Some have been advertising with us since the beginning; over ten years ago." Brenda remarked.

Since 1994 well over 720,000 copies of "Where When How" have been printed and distributed. Many visitors take the magazine home to share with family and friends to plan their next vacation to the Turks & Caicos. The magazine can be found around the world.

"While our subscriber base is mostly North America, we are amazed at the inquiries we've received from Japan, China, Russia, Italy, Croatia, London, Dubai, South Africa, Bolivia, India, France, Germany, Switzerland and Andorra - we had to look that one up" Brenda admitted.

Travel writers, photographers and various publications from the Caribbean, USA, Canada, and Europe were honoured during the six day CTO conference in St Thomas.

Brenda said congratulations have poured in from friends and advertisers. Anne Daloia, Public Relations Project Administrator for CTO said, "Again, congratulations and we look forward to seeing more of your excellent Caribbean coverage in the future."

In addition to those awards, three talented school children were presented with awards for winning an essay contest sponsored by the acclaimed tourism magazine Condé Nast Traveler, the CTO, and American Airlines. Grand Turk student, Tarina Parker of H J. Robinson High School, was one of 23 finalists in the prestigious contest. She attended the conference in St. Thomas with finalists from the 30 member countries of the CTO.

This year's essay topic was "How to Preserve Your Island's Environment, and do so by Enlisting the Whole Community's Help" Ten year old Shandida Greida Gibbs of St. Eustatia won the $2,000 Grand Prize Scholarship.

The Turks & Caicos is one of 30 government members and a myriad of private sector entities comprising the CTO. The purpose of this association is to provide its members with the services and information needed to develop sustainable tourism which will benefit the Caribbean people. It provides technical support in the areas of human resources, marketing, information technology, research and statistics.

At this year's conference, the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) signed an historic agreement with the CTO, pledging "full cooperation and collaboration between the public and private sectors of the Caribbean tourism industry in order to develop tourism in a coherent, effective and efficient manner."
