ST THOMAS, USVI: Leading tourism publication, Conde Nast Traveller magazine, told tourism industry leaders on Saturday that the island of St John in the US Virgin Islands has been selected by its readers as the number one Caribbean travel destination for 2005.
Editor-in-Chief Klara Glowczewcska explained to Caribbean Tourism Conference delegates that the the publication surveyed 27,000 of it's readers for its 18th annual Reader's Choice Awards poll. Results were received both online and by regular mail. A survey participation requirement was that respondents must actually have visited the location they voted for with in the last three years.
This is the first year St John has received this distinction. The survey products evaluated include, destinations, hotels, resorts, and cruise-lines. The prestigious award was presented to the USVI Department of Tourism at a gala ceremony held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on October 17.
"We are absolutely thrilled. St John and all of the US Virgin Islands have always shared a common goal of welcoming travelers as guests to our home," said USVI Commissioner of Tourism Pamela Richards. "We are honored to be chosen as the best Caribbean island by some of the most discerning and knowledgeable travelers in the world."
Each island candidate was rated, criterion by criterion, as excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor. Categories included scenery, friendliness, lodging, restaurants and activities. Complete results of the poll will be published in the November 2005 magazine issue.
