BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: The United States Government is sponsoring the participation of two technical experts to the Caribbean Internet Forum, being held in Bridgetown, Barbados from October 4 to 5, 2005.
Officials from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunication and Information Administration (NTIA) will make presentations and lead discussions on the U.S. experience in encouraging the development of emerging technologies for broadband deployment, convergence, and voice over IP (VoIP).
The officials also will discuss the importance of a competitive marketplace and transparent regulatory practices to establish a sustainable environment in which broadband can flourish.
These sessions are being offered by the Caribbean Internet Forum (CIF) to Caribbean technology experts and government policymakers to provide an opportunity to further explore policy tools aimed at formulating conducive regulatory environments that foster competition, investment and growth in emerging internet-based technologies.
The U.S. participation is sponsored by the Telecommunications Leadership Program, a joint endeavor of the U.S. Department of State and USAID to support telecommunications reform and modernization worldwide.
The Caribbean Internet Forum is the third forum held in the Caribbean region, and it is an important regional initiative to facilitate communication and cooperation, at both national and regional levels, to develop a sustainable environment for Internet technology growth and connectivity in the Caribbean.
