PROVIDENTIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands: Turks & Caicos Chief Minister, Michael Misick, will be attending the final round of the Constitutional Talks with the British Government, to be held in London next week.
In a statement made Wednesday afternoon, the Chief Minister announced that he will be heading a delegation comprising of Jeffrey Hall, Minister of Immigration, Labour and Housing, Mr. Carlos Simmons, QC, Mr. Donhue Gardiner, Secretary General of the Progressive National Party and Mr. Norman Hamilton, Special Adviser to the Chief Minister.
Commenting, he said he expects the talks to be fruitful and defining in terms of constitutional modernization.
He went on to point out that the opposition has declined the invitation to participate in the talks. However, he says his government has “an obligation and a mandate to continue to pursue the modernization of our constitution”.
He called the response of the opposition rather unfortunate in not taking the opportunity to form a joint delegation to present to the British Government their position and the position of the people whom have elected them as representatives.
Despite the unwillingness of the opposition to participate in the talks, Chief Minister Misick said it will not affect the outcome as constitutional changes are spearheaded by the government.
The quest for modernization of the constitution, according to Misick is to benefit the entire Turks and Caicos Islands.
The Chief Minister plans to hold a follow-up press conference upon his return from London to inform the public on the outcome of these talks.
