ST THOMAS, USVI: Dr. Arthur A. Richards, the first native Virgin Islander to serve as President of the University of the Virgin Islands has passed away.
Richards played a key role in the field of education in the US Virgin Islands. His vision for higher education in the Territory was exemplified by the expansion of degree programs offered by UVI during his tenure from 1980 to 1990.
During this period the institution's name changed from the College of the Virgin Islands to the university of the Virgin Islands.
Dr. Richards began as a public school teacher, then as a principal in both elementary and secondary schools. He went on to serve as both Deputy, and Assistant Commissioner of Education. Between 1980 and 1990 Dr. Richards served as a Provost, Dean, and finally as President of the University of the Virgin Islands.
Current UVI President, Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster stated, "Dr. Richards brought all of the experience he had with education in the territory, a sense of humor and a constant commitment to treating people with dignity." University of the Virgin Islands, President Emeritus Dr. Orville Kean said, "Dr. Richards passing is the end of an era."
Delegate Donna M. Christensen expressed condolences to the Richards family. "I am indeed saddened to hear of Dr. Richard's passing," said Christensen. "His many contributions to Virgin Islands education stand as a testament to his care of our children and his commitment to their excellence."
The Delegate further stated, "many of our community leaders were students of Dr. Richards and were molded by his high standards."
