COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: Daren Ganga, the skipper of the West Indies A team currently on tour in Sri Lanka, has denied reports that he accused batting maestro Brian Lara of not being a team player.

According to a report on Cricinfo, Ganga was quoted as saying Lara "is not a team player and records have shown it." However in a media release on Monday, Ganga said at no time during his interview did he accused the double world record holder of not being a team player, and the reports were "not only inaccurate but mischievous."

"I, Daren Ganga, wish to advise that the statements attributed to me in a report on the Cricinfo website earlier today about my fellow Trinidadian and West Indian colleague Brian Lara were not only inaccurate but mischievous," Ganga said in the release.

"At no time in my interview did I describe Brian as selfish and not a team player. As a matter of fact, I complimented Brian for the role he has played in my cricket career and the opportunities that he has given me as captain of the Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies team. Questions were put to me to which I replied that I had no comment, yet appeared with answers."

Ganga said the media report came at a time when West Indies cricket is at a low and it was unfortunate that "misinterpretations and misstatements" had to be published. He added that he will remain committed to the region's game and hope that the heads can come together in making the disputes right.

"It is truly unfortunate that so many misinterpretations and misstatements are being published at a time when West Indians and West Indies Cricket needs to come together for the good of the region. I hope that there is no attempt to damage my credibility for my decision made in the recent past and to discredit my reputation. I remain committed to West Indies Cricket and to the integrity of the game and players of the Caribbean," Ganga added.

Earlier reports suggested that the 25-year-old Ganga questioned the commitment level of Lara when he represents the regional team while adding that current captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul needs to communicate more with his players.

It was the second time in as many weeks Ganga
