PARAMARIBO, Suriname (AFP): Former Suriname dictator Desi Bouterse will run for the presidency as a candidate in the South American nation's May 25 parliamentary election, according to nominations published Saturday.
Opinion polls have indicated that Bouterse is the most popular leader, closely followed by former president Jules Wijdenbosch and current head of state Ronald Venetiaan who are also standing in the election.
Bouterse, a military ruler after a coup in February 1980 until 1987, has been nominated by the National Democratic Party (NDP) of which he is the chairman. Bouterse told a rally he expects the NDP to be the biggest party.
