Nevis joins in celebrating World Health Day 2005
Thursday, April 7, 2005

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis: Public Health Nurse, Ms Lorraine Archibald said that the Nevis Ministry of Health has been providing proficient health care to all mothers and children for many years as one of its priorities.

During a prerecorded message in commemoration of World Health Day, at the Government Press and Public Relations Department, NTV Channel 8, on April 6, 2005, Ms Archibald noted that the World Health Organization has announced this year’s theme as “Healthy Mothers and Children.”

Assigned to the Gingerland Health Centre, Ms Archibald observed that health care is being offered at the hospital and all health centers on the island, and expressed, “over the years, there have been resident obstetricians, gynecologists on the island to assess and categorize high risk and low risk pregnant mothers.”

According to the District Nurse, the care which has been given on the island helps to reduce the number of maternal and infants death due to quick intervention. She said, “For over 10 years, there has not been a maternal death but for 2004, there were 3 still births recorded.”

“Healthy mothers and children are the real wealth of societies. When mothers survive and thrive their children survive and thrive. When both mothers and children survive and thrive, the societies in which they live prosper,” intimated Nurse Archibald.

“Health care providers must be commended for their excellent care offered during pregnancy, child birth and the post natal period. Praise must also be given to the primary health care providers for their vigilant care offered in ensuring that at least 90% immunization coverage is attained.”

Child welfare clinic is offered free at all health centers on Nevis, where children are immunized against communicable diseases, such as mumps, measles and tuberculosis.
