LETTER TO THE EDITOR

St Vincent Parrot Conservation group also opposes cross-country road

Thursday, March 10, 2005

Dear Sir:

I was very interested to see the article of March 3, 2005 by your correspondent Kenton Chance entitled 'International group opposes St Vincent's cross-country road'. It has stimulated me to bring to your attention the resolution of the St Vincent Parrot Conservation Consortium (SVPCC).

The SVPCC is an official advisory body to the Government of St Vincent & The Grenadines regarding the national bird Amazona guildingii (which is a threatened species) and how best to ensure its survival. The SVPCC has international as well as Vincentian composition, and the Loro Parque Fundación, an international NGO based in Spain, officiates as its Secretary.

As you will see from the resolution produced at the last biannual meeting of the SVPCC, this body advises against the construction of a cross-country road in the zone proposed to date by the Government of St Vincent & The Grenadines. It considers that such a development will not be sustainable, will put at great risk the survival of the national bird, and will be the cause of recurrent environmental damage (such as landslip and siltation) which will cost the people of St Vincent dearly in future.

The SVPCC is very supportive of the effective development of the island, and especially for this reason counsels the Government of St Vincent & The Grenadines to route the road in an alternative zone such the development will be sustainable in the long term.

Dr David Waugh
