Cayman Islands honours Guyana prison officers

GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Members of the Guyana Prison Service were honoured with awards for their performance during the year. The honourees included Roxanne Winfield who was shot on February 23, 2002 and severely injured. 

A representative from the Cayman Islands' Prison Service on Friday awarded former Guyana Prison Service (GPS) Officer Roxanne Winfield with a cheque for US$500 at the GPS Incentive Award ceremony.

Stephen Atherley, third in command at the Cayman Islands' Prison Service presented Winfield with the cheque on behalf of his colleagues. Atherley said they recognised that what had happened to Winfield could happen to any prison officer. 

Winfield was shot during the February 23, 2002 jail-break when five prisoners escaped; another prison officer was killed. 

At the presentation ceremony, former and current members of the GPS were also awarded for their service. 

Director of Prisons Dale Erskine said the GPS will contribute $130,000 from its incentive scheme to Winfield and will continue to make contributions. 

He publicly acknowledged the efforts of all prison officers and said he was happy that Atherley recognised the value of their work. He encouraged the officers to do their best for the new year knowing that their service is valued.

Officers who received awards for their work were: Joint Services officer for the year P. Crawford; C. Britton and L. Gilead, for 25 years of service; most outstanding officers, M. Langevine of Prison Headquarters, D. Nelson of Georgetown, S. Simon of Mazaruni; D. Darlington of New Amsterdam and C. Skeete of Timehri. Special incentives also went to the Prison Headquarters Accounts Department worker P. Dasraj; S Roberts of the Georgetown Registry Department; D. Clark of Mazaruni Stores and Finance Department; C. George of New Amsterdam; M Wharton of Lusignan Prison and W. Abrams of Timehri.
