Tobago named Best Caribbean Island
Thursday, November 25, 2004

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago: Tobago was named the Best Caribbean Island of the Year, and Tobago hotels also received honors, at the Caribbean World Travel Awards during World Travel Market in London earlier this month.

Tobago beat out 23 other islands, including Jamaica, Barbados and the Bahamas to receive this prestigious international award.

“Absolutely fantastic! This award has instilled so much pride in the people of Tobago and Trinidad. We are so proud to receive this honor. Tobago encompasses the genuine Caribbean experience and we are pleased that the island is being recognized for what we’ve always felt,” said Warren Solomon, Vice President of Tourism.

Two of the island’s hotels also received honors, the Blue Haven Resort as Best Eco Resort and the Coco Reef Resort & Spa as Best Resort of the Year.

“Tobago offers not only a wonderful range of accommodations but also a full Caribbean vacation experience. The island boasts secluded pristine beaches, a rich culture and lush rainforests,” commented Neil Wilson, Secretary of Tourism, at the Tobago House of Assembly.

From palm-shaded coves, long white sand stretches and picturesque views of the coastline, Tobago has a number of beaches located throughout the island. Tobago also boasts a wealth of natural attractions. In 1765 Tobago declared its rain forest a protected area, establishing the first such preserve in the western hemisphere. Buccoo Reef, a protected marine park since 1973, harbors multitudes of tropical fish, brain and star corals. Nearby Bon Accord Lagoon provides a home for hundreds of birds, including the Caribbean martin, brown-crested flycatcher and white-tailed nightjar.

Tobago, located in the southeastern region of the Caribbean, provides an ideal location for weddings & honeymoons, eco-adventure, scuba diving, golf as well as unadulterated fun in the sun. With their careful approach to tourism, Tobago offers one of the last absolutely unspoiled Caribbean destinations. Sister island to Trinidad, Tobago is the quintessential Caribbean island with secluded beaches, quaint villages, charming hotels and smart new resorts.
