PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Many Trin-Grenadians and Trinba-gonians may this year have to come to grips with the possible reality of not being able to attend carnival in neighbouring island and spice country Grenada.
The organization responsible for organizing the annual cruises for the Spice Mass celebrations was faced with disappointing news four days before embarking; Pan Trinbago found out that the Windward II which was hired to carry the passengers is without a passenger certificate.
The Pan Trinbago President, Patrick Arnold, reported that the trip is off and passengers will now have to be refunded.
The president said that the exorbitant sum of US$86,000 charged by the Windward, prevented them from cruising on to the carnival celebrations in St. Vincent, but nevertheless they geared up for Grenada’s carnival at an affordable cost of US$46,000.
Arnold said that while monies will be refunded to the people, he thought it was dishonest of the boat owners not to inform them of the problem they were faced with. He said that fingers would now be pointing to Pan Trinbago, “but it is not our fault, we do not run the boat,” said a disappointed Arnold.
The Windward II was scheduled to leave Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday at 1:00am, to arrive in Grenada for the Carnival celebrations on Monday and Tuesday; but this would no longer be possible since they may not get the certificate until Friday morning.
In a report on a leading local talk radio show, Mr. Arnold said that the boat owners knew of the situation but only informed Pan Trinbago of such on Tuesday morning.
