British Virgin Islands experiencing unstable weather conditions

TORTOLA, BVI -- At 11:00am Friday, Tropical Disturbance 37, which is the remnants of Erika, was located about 130 miles south of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The area of thunderstorms is nearly stationary, but a poorly-defined low-level center was located near 17.2N/68.2W, or about 155 miles west-southwest of San Juan. Movement is to the west-northwest at 8-10 mph.

The associated thunderstorms continue to cover a large portion of the northeastern Caribbean Sea. The storms have been decreasing over the past several hours and show no signs of organization. Redevelopment chances remain low, with increasing upper-level wind shear expected to begin affecting the area over the next 24 hours.

While forecasters think the thunderstorm activity will decrease, the disturbance may still produce locally heavy rainfall across the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico today. Some of these thunderstorms will create squall-like conditions and rough sea conditions in open waters. A small craft advisory was in effect until 6pm Friday.

A small craft advisory means that winds of 22 to 33 knots and/or seas of 7 feet and greater are expected to produce hazardous marine conditions for small craft. Inexperienced mariners especially those operating smaller vessels should avoid navigating in these conditions.
