ST CROIX, USVI -- At 5am Monday Tropical Depression Ana was located near 16.6N/63.9W, or about 95 miles southeast of St Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Movement is toward the west-northwest near 28 mph. The associated thunderstorm activity has increased and the maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph. The British Virgin Islands remains under a Tropical Storm Watch.
Ana is now affecting the British Virgin Islands with gusty winds and heavy rainfall which could be accompanied by thunderstorm activity. These conditions will remain throughout the day and into tonight and may worsen as Tropical Depression Ana moves closer to the Territory. Persons in high terrain can expect gusty winds and hazy conditions. Drivers are asked to proceed with caution in these areas. Seas will deteriorate especially along the southern shores.
Ana is forecast to track toward the west-northwest to northwest during the next 5 days. Along this track, it will pass just south of St Croix later Monday. Ana is expected to remain a tropical depression for the next day or so before weakening to a remnant low by Tuesday morning.
A special marine bulletin has been issued for waters from the Virgin Islands out to 10 nautical miles as several thunderstorms have been indentified producing gusty winds in excess of 50mph including frequent lightning. A small craft advisory is also in effect as coastal waters will experience tropical storm like conditions with winds 25mph to 30mph and seas 6 to 8 feet.
The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) reminds residents to continue to monitor the system and remain in a high state of preparedness.
