TORTOLA, BVI -- The British Virgin Islands is currently under a Tropical Storm Watch, which means that tropical storm conditions are expected to begin to affect the territory within 36 hours.

The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) is urging residents to continue to pay close attention to both storms as they both pose significant threats to the Territory. Yachts have been taken to marine shelters, and residents are beginning to take precautions, such as purchasing canned goods, water and batteries, and checking roofs for loose sheeting, and yards for debris.

All residents are reminded to safeguard themselves, keep tuned to local radio and television stations for current information, and listen in to the DDM’s hurricane preparedness ads being aired on local radio stations.

Tropical Storm Ana was located near latitude 14.9 north longitude 57.8 west or about 240 miles east of Dominica on Sunday. Ana is moving toward the west near 25 mph, a motion expected to continue, with a turn toward the west-northwest. On this track, Ana should reach the Leeward Islands late Sunday or early Monday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next couple of days. Hurricane hunter aircraft data indicate that Ana is poorly organized and could dissipate later today. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 50 miles from the center. Estimated minimum central pressure is 1005mb.

The center of Tropical Storm Bill was located near latitude 12.1 north longitude 38.4 west or about 1,555 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Bill is moving west-northwest near 16 mph, a motion expected to continue for the next couple of days.
