TORTOLA, BVI -- The BVI Cancer Society demonstrated solidarity and support for the American Cancer Society (USVI) annual Relay for Life. Approximately 18 members of the BVI Cancer Society traveled to St Thomas last Saturday to be a part of the American Cancer Society’s signature fund-raising event held at the Charlotte Amalie High School track.

The group was invited by and participated under the auspices of team VITELCO. Almost 50 groups participated in this year’s activities under the theme “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.

American Cancer Society's Relay for Life
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity, celebrating HOPE for the last 25 years. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.

Teams of people camp out at local high schools, parks, or fields and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.

Teams of people from all walks of life have fun while raising much-needed funds to fight cancer and raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. Relay for Life is a life-changing event that brings people together to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. It is also a time where loved ones who have lost the battle are remembered through lighted luminaries.

“People choose to Relay because they have been touched by cancer and desperately want to put an end to the disease”’ said one Committee member. Participants confess that the strength of survivors is “inspiring”.

“We participated in many fun activities and had a blast. We even won a karaoke competition and musical chairs. It was an opportunity for the Society to network and partner with our neighbours in this

universal fight against cancer”, said team captain Dawn Leonard. Other team members simply admitted, “We had fun!”

The Committee hopes to have the first Relay for Life in the BVI early next year with anticipated participation from Team VITELCO and other groups and organizations within the Territory.

Last month, the BVI Cancer Society held a Candlelight Vigil under the theme, An evening of Remembrance and Recommitment as part of a campaign to re-activate the organisation.

The Society is planning a Membership Drive for Wednesday 15th, July 2009 between the hours of 8 am. – 4pm at the lobby of the Social Security Board. All are encouraged to become members.
