PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands: On Sunday morning, following a direct hit by Hurricane Ike on the Turks and Caicos Islands, Floyd Seymour, Leader of the opposition Peoples’ Democratic Movement (PDM), said this is the “worst natural disaster in living memory”.

According to Seymour, Grand Turk was very badly hit, and with landlines being down since Saturday night and cell phone service out for the past few hours, there has been no real communication with the island in recent hours.

However, Cable and Wireless are reportedly working to try to restore cell phone service as quickly as possible.

Seymour further told Caribbean Net News that extensive flooding on Grand Turk was exacerbated by the remaining floodwater left over from Tropical Storm Hanna earlier in the week.

South Caicos did not fare any better, said Seymour, “with some houses completely flattened and entire roofs blown off.”

“There is great concern for Salt Cay,” said Seymour, adding that there has been no contact for some time, with all phones being out of service. Seymour further noted that Salt Cay was the only island without a satellite phone available there for use in an emergency

Everyone had advised to evacuate from Salt Cay, but some residents decided to stay and ride out the storm, Seymour said.

In his report, Seymour said that the south side of Providenciales was severely hit, but did not suffer the level of devastation that has been reported on Grand Turk and South Caicos.

Seymour had this message, “We need all the help we can get,” adding, “We will work to rebuild the country, and anyone that can assist is encouraged to lend a helping hand.”

The political leader continued, “Everyone should continue to pray for us,” and urged all aid agencies to offer their assistance in this time of disaster.
