BELMOPAN, Belize -- Belize has a new police commissioner, veteran police officer Crispin Jeffries, who took over from Gerald Westby who resigned after serving 34 years in the force.
Jeffries has taken charge of the police force at a time when there has been a consistent increase in serious crimes, including murders, robberies and sexual offences.
Meanwhile, the president of the Public Service Union, Jacqueline Willoughby, has criticised the appointment.
She said that, although the union has no objection to Jeffries, his appointment and other promotions were carried out contrary to the Public Service Regulations, since protocols were not followed and, as a result, career officers have become part of the political directorate.
The union president said that Jeffries has been retired since last year, yet he was given another contract.
This, she said, prevented a younger person from getting the top post. She added, if this trend continues, young officers would be frustrated.
