BELIZE CITY, Belize: Belize’s Chief Justice, Abdulai Conteh admitted that the justice system was not perfect because of a lack of resources.
Channel 5 Belize reported that the Chief Justice told a workshop at Belize City that, despite its problems, the Belize judiciary was an independent body.
“We need equipment to make the courts function properly. We need more magistrates, we need more Supreme Court Judges,” Conteh said. “We don't have all of these and you have a slew of cases coming everyday to court, sometimes judgments are delayed invariable because of the judge's time, they do not have enough time to do all the cases at the same time or write timely judgments."
Despite its setbacks, Conteh said that he did not believe that Belize's judiciary “has anything to be ashamed of".
He added that the government was trying its best, but that there were other demands, such as education, health, and infrastructure, but he felt that the government could do more.
"I will not tire of asking for more," he said. | | | | Reads : 1915 | | | |
