Letter: The myth of Ralph Gonsalves

Published on Saturday, May 22, 2010 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

When Ralph Gonsalves began the destruction and decimation of civil society in St Vincent & the Grenadines ten years ago, indeed making St Vincent & the Grenadines ungovernable, Mr Ken Boyea was among those who appeared to decry his tactics and antics. Now a decade later he seemes to be trumpeting the process that Ralph began then. But as I mentioned last week the Dynasty is alive and kicking. Blood is thicker than water. So there is no logical analysis needed here.

According to the late Ellsworth Keane, “you don’t know, you don’t know” (you never know, you never know). Maybe Ken is in on all the PetroCaribe and the ALBA deals. As someone pointed out to me and some other associates, Ken is a very intelligent man, versed in business and the intricacies of ALBA. Could it be that the PM has discussed all the intricacies of ALBA with him but not with his associates in government or the Vincentian people? Ken was blowing a pretty loud horn for the referendum so there must have been something in it for him too, so we should not be surprised about his loud blabber.

In an address on June 25, 2009 at the UN, Mr Gonsalcves chided the IMF and the unregulated financial centers of the developed world for “prescribing and proscribing his policy space.” He went on to say that the ideological sanctimony of those who hold us to a higher standard than they hold themselves are the ones that are heavily indebted, they are indebted to the poor peoples of the world based on a history of broken promises, failed advice, neglect, fiscal hypocrisy, ideological bankruptcy and welfare colonialism. Really! Is there anyone more sanctimonious that the Dictator Gonsalves? He bites off more than he can chew and when he starts choking and his gumbs start bleeding he blames everyone else.

Sisyphus was an ancient king in Greek mythology famous for not what he did in life but for his punishment in the Afterlife (Albert Camus). As his punishment he had to push a huge heavy rock up a hill that kept rolling back down. He was compelled to push the rock without success for all eternity. The punishment ordered by the gods was a horrendous punishment for anyone, but not for one who has brought us to the gates of hell.

We describe our government as a parliamentary democracy based on English common law. Will we still function as such when we are completely integrated into ALBA by the end of 2011? How will our elected representatives function within the ALBA model? Have our political representatives asked themselves that question?

For you “Ten Little Indians,” Please think long and prudently about what Mr Gonsalves has in store for you. As he picks each of you off, are you going to begin suspecting and accusing each other of the crimes around you. He has already made you irrelevant in adopting integration into ALBA. All of you have been sidelined by Mr Gonsalves and your political futures have all but been destroyed or are now in doubt. You must now make your choices, difficult decisions, but you must speak now or forever hold your peace. In the interest of common sense and in recognition of the suffering that our people are now experiencing, Vincentians implore you to resign your seats in parliament and let us decide who we want to represent us for the next five years. We are allowing you that choice now. Would you choose to remain chained to that ogre that is eating you alive? Is the hold on power so overwhelming and inebriating that you can’t give it up until our next general election is scheduled? Many before you have done so and kept their dignity and pride intact! They had the courage to run away and live to fight another day. Vincentians are a grateful and graceful people and will remember those of you who have been good to them. Mr Mitchell, you may remember in 1972 resigned his seat in parliament and ran as an independent in the subsequent election. No single party won enough seats to form a government, so he held the deck of cards and had the final say. Of course we hope that doesn’t happen again!

The pathway to success is traveled by those who believe in themselves and the good that life can bring. The great doctor John Rock on admonishment that he should be afraid to meet his maker, for the perceived evils that he had done, replied that in his faith, he is taught that the lord is with us always. “When my time comes, there will be no need for introductions” Do not let the limits of your own field of vision be the limits of your world. Even as the holy and the righteous among you cannot rise beyond the highest which is in each of you. So the wicked and the weak cannot fall lower than the lowest which is in them also.

Unchain yourselves from the dictator and monster who is robbing you and our people of our future prosperity.
