Letter: So-called progressives' socialism exposed - Part 1

Published on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

I am amazed that the so-called progressives in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) now want to be called intellectuals. However, they are intellectuals to an ideology. May I rephrase that to ideological intellects. The old saying stills holds true today, “beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing.” These communists have repackaged themselves as socialists. Under the pretense of social democracy, they try to install their communist agenda of self-fulfilling ideas.

They love to chant down the colonialist and the imperialist. The colonialist and the imperialist had mainly economic ties to SVG based on the harvest of slavery (sugar, cotton, tobacco, and rum). The colonialist and the imperialist had no real investment in terms of shared culture, heritage or citizenship.

On the other hand, the ideological intellectuals do! They are Vincentians and have shared culture, heritage and citizenship. That’s why they are given a chance to lead the country as sons of the soil. A chance to build on what previous governments have done and continue the work in progress. Not to tear down and install their self-fulfilling ideology.

It is ironic that they speak so much about the imperialist and the colonialist, when they themselves are worse. They are the worst in the sense that they want to keep or put their fellow citizens in bondage in this twenty-first century. They are given leadership of government, to manage the country’s affairs but instead they want to rule the country as kings.

I cannot have a different point of view than they do. I should just join the line and wine, otherwise crapo smoke my pipe. They have lost sight that they are servants of the country and the people, not rulers or kings.

Do they care about the people and the country?

On one hand, they say they do. But do they? Let’s take a look at just a few things in SVG. I am sure that the PM can look out of the financial building complex and see the dilapidated state of “Little Tokyo”. They were the ones that told the people not to move some 10 plus years ago, during the period when the former government wanted to do the necessary repairs. It has been over nine years as leaders of SVG and “Little Tokyo” is still in a dilapidated state.

Within the first five years of their leadership, the roads were so bad that “Poorsah” had a hit calypso “In ah hole”. Today many of these same roads are still in a state of disrepair.

They boast that under their government more people are on poor relief (public assistant). Do they truly understand what that means? Is this why they would not release the poverty assessment report? Are they too ashamed to show the people that poverty has increased under their administration?

Of course, they are going to blame it on 9/11 and the worldwide economic meltdown. But what have they done to stop the bleeding? They have placed a 15% VAT on the poor people, what I sarcastically called “a progressives tax” because it was introduced by the so-called progressives. They have taken away prime agricultural lands from the people. Let’s us not forget the one dollar departure tax they had on the people of the Grenadines. It’s no wonder they boast that under their administration more people are on public assistance.

I had to laugh when I heard one of them say, “things are so good in SVG, we are sending money back to help family members in the US since the economic downturn.” I have never heard so much poppycock! Remittances (Postal Orders, Money Gram, Western Union, barrels, etc.) have for years helped keep SVG afloat.

Has that person ever stopped to think it is not just remittances people send to help their families in SVG but also savings for their own retirement too? Therefore, some people overseas are dipping into retirement savings they have in SVG. Hey, Sherlock, less money to spend in SVG during their retirement years and no remittances coming to family members in SVG.

Has that thought ever crossed your mind? Do you understand the significance of that now and in the future?

Peace and justice and get real.
