Email To Friend Print Version | Dear Sir:
It baffles me why a "impoverished" tiny country like St Vincent and the Grenadines is making a rather bold bid to secure the vacant seat of the 15 member United Nations Security Council.
The country's Prime Minister, Ralph Gonsalves, has drained the country of the last ounce, millions of dollars spent on the November 25 referendum, and the massive fees paid to Law Revision Commissioner, PR Campbell, legal expert Francis Alexis and others.
Now he wants to hang his hat where his hand cannot reach.
Look who Comrade Ralph wants his representative to sit with: massive countries like USA, United Kingdom, China, Germany, and Frances who hold permanent seats . I am now convinced that Gonsalves is not right in his head, he is trying to secure a seat because his father or big brother Hugo Chavez wants him to be there mainly to block Colombia from getting on board because Chavez is bitterly opposed to Colombia because of its affiliation to the United States.. In other words my country will be the proxy for Venezuela. It well known that Ralph is a Chavez puppet and has no credibility.
I gather that Caricom states (except two) have so far given the nod to support St Vincent's application. This is rather unfortunate. The regional leaders should not look merely at the surface and support Ralph because of Caricom, but they should have asked what benefit would my "2x3 island" get by sitting in with such a distinguished and powerful body. They should have seen that Ralph had other motives.
More so it will entail fantastic costs to lobby and otherwise, which the country cannot afford. Moreover if St Vincent and the Grenadines is chosen, it will have to strengthen its Mission to have more qualified persons who can deal with high level security. and the million dollar question is where the country will get funds from for such an expensive two year exercise. Remember the country had to seek help from ALBA to pay salaries and other expenses.
I suppose Ralph has to sing for his supper for getting ALBA's help. He has to show his loyalty and support to his boss Chavez.
I am urging Opposition leader Arnhim Eustace to try to earth evidence to convince the authorities that Chavez is behind the move.
If St Vincent and the Grenadines succeeds it will be the smallest country ever to be in the UN Security Council. Only three Caricom countries had the privilege to serve in that body and they are comparatively large countries: Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
