Email To Friend Print Version | ST GEORGE’S, Grenada -- Grenada's Prime Minister Tillman Thomas has reiterated his government’s commitment to deepening relations between the Caribbean and Latin America. His comments came against the backdrop of a recent meeting in Mexico of leaders from the Caribbean and Latin American regions to discuss the formation of a body designed to address issues of mutual interests.

“Our intention is to strengthen relationship with our counterparts across the Caribbean Sea. There are issues that are germane to us that we need to address together. We are committed to strengthening south-south cooperation to the benefit of the people of this region,” the Prime Minister said, prior to leaving for the 21st Inter-sessional meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
The Heads of Government are likely to discuss the issue further, when they meet with the Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS) Jose Miguel Insulza, at the CARICOM meeting which began Thursday in Roseau, Dominica.
The Grenadian leader said member states respect the important role the Organisation of American States (OAS) plays in the region, for the promotion of political dialogue, human rights, democracy, security and cooperation in the Hemisphere.
Thomas will also champion discussions for the establishment of a regional organ within CARICOM for the Cadet movement, which was revived in Grenada in 2009.
“The history of the cadet corps has shown that it can play a significant role in national development, especially through its contribution to our young people. The region can benefit from a more coordinated approach to the programme, which promotes education and discipline among young people,” the Prime Minister said.
The Grenada delegation to the CARICOM meeting is Prime Minister Thomas, Foreign Minister, Peter David, Ken Sylvester of the Caribbean Knowledge Learning Network (CKLN) and Trade Officer Junior Mahon. Finance Minister Nazim Burke has been appointed to act as Prime Minister. | | | | Reads : 802 | | | |
