PARAMARIBO, Suriname -- With the leasing of an Airbus A340-300 Suriname’s national carrier, Surinam Airways, says it’s on the path of expanding and improving services from Suriname to the Netherlands.

In order to facilitate the acquisition of the new aircraft, Surinam Airways, several weeks earlier sold its lone Boeing 747-300. The Airbus was commissioned on Sunday shortly after its arrival from the Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

Earlier this year the national carrier leased two Boeing 737-300 aircraft, replacing its MD-50, to operate the carrier's regional flights.

During the ceremonies at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport company officials disclose that the carrier in 2010 will further expands its fleet with another jet on the Mid-Atlantic service to the Netherlands.

Officials further argued that leasing a smaller aircraft for the Mid-Atlantic service was due to economic pressure since the airline was unable to fill the seats of the Boeing 747-300 during low season.

The A340-300 will be used more often to offer the same capacity per week as before. With the new jet, Surinam Airways will expands its weekly flights from three to four while a further expansion to six weekly services is expected during the high season.

Currently, Surinam Airways is in the process of certification and registration of the Airbus with the national civil aviation authority, CASAS. It is expected that this procedure will be completed this week and the first commercial flight could take off as early as Thursday or over the weekend.

According to officials, the carrier is on track to become one of the most reliable and competitive airlines in the region.
