Montserrat honours former legislators

BRADES, Montserrat -- Former chief ministers John A Osborne, David S Brandt and former speaker of the legislator Joseph Meade were honoured on Wednesday evening for their years of service to Montserrat as members of the legislative council.

The Montserrat Cultural Centre was the venue for the special ceremony and reception hosted by Judith Jeffers Clerk of Councils and the Legislative Council. The former legislators were presented with awards and given a moment to reflect on their years of work. Tributes to each honouree were read by Statistician CT John, ECCB Representative Claudette Weekes, and Regional Affairs Director Claude Hogan

The honourees recounted special memories of their time in office to the gathering of family and friends and included former Chief Minister John Osborne’s expounding on his now famous words: “Every Montserratian should own a house, a car, and have money in the bank.” The former politician, who spent 38 years in the legislature, advised the new ministers that they should aspire to do their best and to always put the people of Montserrat, first.

David Brandt, who is a lawyer by profession, served as chief minister of Montserrat from August 1997 until April 2001.

Joseph Meade served as Speaker of the Legislator from 2001 until 2009.

John A Osborne served as chief minister from 1978 until 1991 and then from 2001 until 2006. In July 2008, Gerald's Airport was renamed John A Osborne Airport in his honour.
