Letter: Vincentians, exercise your rights

Published on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

The Referendum to decide whether or not the 1979 Constitution should be overhauled will go on today as scheduled.

An attempt to block it failed because of technical or legal difficulties since the applicants -- the group of four who are supporters of the Opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) have to amend their application and this cannot be done before next week -- after the referendum date.

I am at a loss why the applicants took so long to move to the Courts, and even more dismayed due to the fact that they did not serve the documents in a timely fashion on the Attorney General who represents the Government, which is elementary?

Maybe the good Lord wants to put the issue to a test. I am very worried about the number of persons, more than 98,000 who are registered voters according to the Supervisor of Elections; can this ever be a realistic figure?

Another issue is allegations from all quarters of bribery where there are large sums of moneys that are being circulated to get a "Yes “vote.

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves went on radio and threatened to jail anyone who further discloses the names of persons who cashed or deposited large sums of US dollars. The Prime Minister who is also an attorney should know that disclosing information about bank transactions is not a criminal offence, this is a communist tactic used to control and muzzle people. “We want freedom”, we must protect our democracy; Vincentians, do not make a few dollars fool you.

What is laughable is that Gonsalves told the nation on radio that his young son is a businessman and was within his right to exchange US dollars. I wonder why US dollars? United States dollars are washing the streets of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The leader of the NDP leader broadcast live on radio by naming several persons who are linked to the governing United Labour Party (ULP) of exchanging large sums of US dollars which it is alleged are being used to bribe for a "Yes “vote.

The issues outlined by the leader of the opposition leader are very serious. I urge all Venetians and home and abroad to take warning. This is only the smoke, should the yes vote succeed the fire will come sooner than you expect.

It is so amazing how Francis Alexis and Humid Ginny can sell their souls for a few dollars, one wonders what is behind all of this. No one is going to give up their reputation for the love of another country where they do not have strong ties. This is truly amazing. Vincentians must think carefully what these four lawyers have up their sleeves to go all out after all the scandals to try ensure a yes vote, Grenada and Trinidad take warning, no one puts his neck on the line just for friendship. “What sweet in goat mouth does sour in ye bam bam”.

Only time will tell and time is longer than twine.
