ST JOHN'S, Antigua -- The government is to embark on detailed discussions with the local manufacturers, construction industry representatives and heavy duty contractors, to look at proposals from the sectors for initiatives to stimulate business development in Antigua and Barbuda.

The government’s team for the talks will comprise officials from the ministries of trade and finance, and the Antigua and Barbuda Investment Authority.

A decision to meet with the manufacturers and contractors within seven days of the submission of proposals from the groups to the Minister of Finance was taken at Wednesday’s consultation between the Ministry of Finance and private sector representatives. The representatives were drawn from the Contractors Association, Employers Federation, Small Business Network, Truckers Alliance and the Small Business and Manufacturers Association.

The consultation was the third in a series taking place this week to update stakeholders on measures being considered for implementation under the Government’s Fiscal Consolidation and Debt Sustainability Programme.

Finance Minister Harold Lovell, who led the consultations, also promised to meet with the Contractors Association within three days of receiving their proposals for public/private partnerships.

Among the concerns raised by the participants was the number of unregistered business operators in Antigua and Barbuda. The Minister advised the meeting that procurement legislation would soon be taken to Parliament that will require contractors and other goods and services providers to be registered in order to conduct any kind of business with the Government.
