Success means different things to different people. If you were to conduct a simple, non-scientific survey of people the world over asking if they want to be successful, there would be a resounding yes. Yet many persons live their lives in a manner that continually sabotaged their desire to succeed.

Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player that ever lived, said “I’ve failed over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed”.
Yes in order to become successful we will meet with many failures, but we need to persist until we cross the goal line. Someone once said “success has many fathers but failure is an orphan.”
So today my friends, I dare you to succeed beyond your wildest dreams. Step out in faith believing that you can accomplish your goals. Yes, that business that you started recently may not have worked out but you can begin again. As Henry Ford said, “Failure is simply an opportunity to begin again more intelligently”. We should have learned from our last failure. Most people quit just when they are about to succeed. They quit just as they are approaching the finish line in the Olympics of life.
In recent times, we have been bombarded with so many public failures from the corporate, sports and political worlds. The United States produced some of the more newsworthy scandals or failures:
- Barnard Madoff’s billion dollar Ponzi scheme,
- Ilinois Governor Rod Blagojevich allegedly trying to sell President Barack Obama’s vacant senate seat for future jobs, lobbying connections for his wife and even his own Cabinet position
- New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s penchant for hookers,
- Former presidential candidate John Edwards, found himself in hot water after the National Enquirer revealed he had an extramarital affair with a campaign videographer and
- Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick convicted of lying under oath to hide an affair with his chief of staff.
Yes, folks, failures, scandals, setbacks and disappointments becomes an integral part of our journey toward success. I dare you to succeed today in spite of the challenges and any other kind of adversity.
As you dare to succeed today adhere to these five simple but profound steps:
- Focus on that which you desire most – goals
- Develop a gratitude attitude – thanks
- Emulate someone you admire – mentorship
- Recognize that strength grows out of struggle- perseverance
- Dedicate yourself to lifelong learning – study
You need to have the courage to succeed, to live your dreams. Many times our fears constructs a wall between us and the things that we would like to have or do. This is when you need the courage to leap over your self-imposed barriers and achieve your desires. Malcolm X once mentioned to a young, struggling student who was searching for the keys to success, “If you want one year of prosperity, grow trees, If you want ten years of prosperity, grow grain and trees. But if you want prosperity for a lifetime, then grow people.” In other words, the key to success is personal development. I dare you to succeed today!
Here is what successful men and women know that so many do not according to Author Dennis Kimbro:
- They know that altitude is determined by attitude; they shoot for the stars
- They know that the road to success is a worthy destination
- They take chances; they walk to the beat of a different drummer
- They come early and stay late.
- They dream big dreams and then work on making those dreams come true
- They know the law of averages. They know that success is a statistical event
- They know that if you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything
- They make choices and not excuses
- They have a strong faith, belief in God and respect for their fellow human beings
- They know they are responsible and they respond with ability
- They know their stuff!
I dare you to succeed today! Go forth boldly with confidence and faith because success runs in your genes.
