Belize prepares to export cattle to Mexico

Email To Friend Print Version | BELMOPAN, Belize -- Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries has approved that the entire national cattle herd be tested for tuberculosis and brucellosis to strengthen Belize’s market access opportunities.
This follows a two-day meeting in Belize of technical officers from Mexico and Belize where agreements were made with respect to trade of animals and products of animal origin between the two countries. The technical requirements for the export of cattle to Mexico were developed and cattle farmers will be able to export their cattle shortly.
Montero is also ensuring that Belize is able to export meats (beef) and value-added meat products. Cattle farmers are being informed of the market access opportunity and the requirements they need to meet to export cattle to Mexico
The technical officers of SENASICA, Mexico and BAHA, Belize, the two competent authorities for veterinary services, are working at mutual recognition of competent authorities and disease free status for classical swine fever. SENASICA will provide technical assistance in training of Belize veterinarians, laboratory diagnosis of certain animal diseases and has offered to assist with veterinary personnel to conduct the national sweep to evaluate the status of bovine tuberculosis in Belize as approved by the Minister.
A meeting is scheduled between the Minister and his counterpart in Mexico City in July 2009 to formalize the agreement and initiate activities.
