Miss St Vincent and the Grenadines crowned

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent -- The first competitive show for Vincy Mas, St Vincent and the Grenadines' Carnival, took place on Saturday at the Victoria Park in capital city Kingstown and saw thousands of patrons turning up to witness the crowing of 20-year-old Veronique Williams from the North Leeward Town of Chateaubelair as she took the Miss SVG title.

Veronique appeared as Miss Darcheville Construction Equipment Sales Caribbean Ltd and beat out seven other Delegates to capture the crown.

The win now allows Veronique to take part in this year's Miss Carnival Beauty Pageant, the next beauty show on the Vincy Mas calendar scheduled for the Victoria Park on Friday 6 July 2009.

On her way to taking the crown, Veronique was adjudged as wearing the best swimsuit and evening gown, and was the best at the interview.

22-year old Yaseem Hadaway, Miss Lime, had thhe best talent and was adjudged first runner up, while 18-year old Nickillia Slater-Bridgewater, Miss Lotto, took second runner up position.

Miss Congeniality went to 21-year old Kinorra Lavia, Miss Super Six; Miss Photogenic was 19-year old Kristell Cambridge-Lewis, Miss Mustique Company Ltd, with the most community-spirited award goint to 21-year old Tenille Austin, Miss First Caribbean International Bank Ltd.

The other delegates were 22-year-old Eshurnia Glasgow, Miss Williams Agencies and Fragrances and 18-year-old Asmara Whiskey, Miss Caribbean Imaging Center.

Minister of Culture, René Baptiste, told a local radio station after the crowning she was “pleased with the turnout” and described the Miss SVG show as Vincy Mas' “marque show.”

The rest of the Vincy Mas programme runs from Friday June 19, dubbed 'Fantastic Friday', to Mardi Gras, Tuesday July 7, 2009.

Vincy Mas is being marketed as 'The Hottest Carnival in the Caribbean'.
