PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Political leader of the Trinidad and Tobago opposition United National Congress (UNC), Basdeo Panday, broke the party's code against speaking about its internal politics in public on Monday night, launching a public campaign to expose what he referred to as the true intentions of dissident party members Jack Warner and Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj.

The Trinidad Express reported that Panday said that his silence in the face of embarrassing public utterances by the two senior party members made him “look like a fool”.

At the UNC's public meeting in Carapichaima, Panday, who is just back from a trip in Scotland said, "I will defend this party with my whole life and the time has come for me to put the party's business before the public and reply to the propaganda and lies.”

He referred to deputy leader Jack Warner and Chief Whip Maharaj as "enemies".

He accused both of working out a deal with the governing PNM on the eve of the local government elections, and said that Maharaj wanted to be a part of an organisation to be in charge of discipline "so he could run a parallel organisation to weaken the UNC”.

”They want a party in which they can carry on favouritism and discriminate against others they believe do not support them,” Panday said.

Panday also said he would have much more dirt to reveal in time to come.

”In the weeks ahead I will have a lot to say about the two senior members of the party who want to bring it down rather than boost the party's image,” Panday said.
