Email To Friend Print Version | NEW YORK, USA: Further validating Martinique’s status as the “Rum Capital of the World” ForbesTraveler.com recently featured the island amid a list of the world’s ’10 Fine Liquor Journeys.’ Martinique is the only Caribbean island and the only rum destination to make the list, joining such fabled wine and spirits locales as Japan’s 10 Snakes region, Izmir’s Raki in Turkey and France’s Chartreuse and Cognac regions.
“It’s impossible to tell the story of Martinique without talking about rhum,” said Muriel Wiltord, director Americas for the Martinique Promotion Bureau /CMT USA. “Our unique distillation methods and the distinctive flavors they produce are at the core of what makes Martinique such a wonderful place, and certainly it’s a big part of what attracts thousands of visitors to the island each year.”
Martinique is home to 15 different rhum brands; each produced utilizing a unique rhum agricole method exclusive to the island. Rhum agricole begins with freshly squeezed sugar cane juice taken directly from cane stalks instead of the cheaper molasses by-product of sugar production used virtually everywhere else.
This unique process yields rhums that are more comparable with fine cognacs, earning for Martinique rhums the prestigious French designation Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC), previously reserved only for the finest wines in France. Free rhum tasting is available at all of the island’s distilleries, enabling visiting connoisseurs to fully enjoy the Caribbean’s finest liquor journey.
