Jamaica's foreign minister urges "special and differential treatment" for small economies

CANCUN, Mexico: "The global trading system has not served developing countries as a whole well," and its time for small economies in the region and globally to benefit from "special and differential treatment." That's the word from Jamaica's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. K.D. Knight.

Guyana President, Opposition Leader meet tomorrow

GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Guyana's President Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo, of the ruling Peoples Progressive Party/Civic, and Opposition Leader of the Peoples National Congress, Mr. Robert Corbin will meet tomorrow, 15th September, to discuss the hot button issue of inclusive/shared governance and issues relating to public procurement, the local Stabroek News paper reported.

Hurricane now north of Puerto Rico

MIAMI, Florida: The islands of the Bahamas seems to be out of Hurricane Isabel's path now, at least as of late last night as the hurricane was reclassified to a Category 4, or extremely strong storm. At 11 p.m., last night, the center of Hurricane Isabel was located near about 350 miles north-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

First workers union for BVI 

ROAD TOWN, BVI: Workers in the British Virgin Islands have their first union. The constitution for the 'All Workers Union,' was recently resubmitted to the registrar of the Supreme Court, after the first draft was returned with some comments, The Island Sun reported.

Venezuela council rejects petition for referendum to oust Chavez

CARACAS, Venezuela: The National Elections Council has ruled that opponents of the country's President violated Venezuela's Constitution by conducting a petition drive before the midpoint of President Hugo Chavez six-year term on 19th August. The ruling is a major victory for the embattled President, who has faced stiff opposition from rivals since winning re-election, the Associated Press reported.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad: Fifteen premature babies have died at a neonatal ward at Trinidad's Mt. Hope Women's Hospital, leading officials to close off the ward temporarily.
